Wouldn’t you know it. We happened to be there when the city shuts down streets for use by bicycles, and anyone who wants to move by their own power. A vision of what a car-free city can be.
The idea that cars have been destroying the communal life of cities is slowly dawning on people. Cities in many parts of the world shut down the streets so that people can experience how life-giving a world devoid of cars can be. In Colombia, where this event originated, it’s called CicloVia, a formulation on the Streets for Bicycles concept. In Los Angeles, it’s called CicLAvia, with a play on the word LA. Here in Santiago, is given the name CicloRecreoVia.
Of course, we had to ride it.
